Eldred was my favorite teacher when we were still Taylorsville High School. She taught my junior english class and I still remember she requested that I write my research paper that year on the love affair between Elizabeth Barrette and Robert Browning. I still saw her about town usually at the Festival of Tables in December at the Presbyterian Fellowship Hall or Spring Fling. She was an elegant southern lady with whom I always enjoyed visiting. I am very saddened at her passing and wish the family my most sincere thoughts at this time. I have you in my prayers.

Respectfully,

Gwen Jenkins

I was saddened to learn of the death of Eldred for I had just spoken with her several weeks ago when she indicated she was having health problems but did not go into details...I visited with Eldred several times over the past 6-8 years and always enjoyed our time together. I was pleased to hear her description of the later years of her stepfather and my uncle George Kallam Carter and how she read the newspaper to him in when his eyesight had failed. Sadly I never got to have her identify some family photographs we had chatted about. Please accept my condolences for the loss of your relative.

Please accept my sincere condolences at the loss of your loved one,
Eldred Mayes. She was the step daughter of my great uncle George Carter of Taylorsville. As a fellow teacher, I know that though she and Don did not have children of their own, that she made a huge positive impact on the lives of many children in her 30 years of teaching.
We lived around the block from her during our 7 years in Alexander County and I saw her many times and enjoyed getting to know her better. Once she came to our home for a music party and we enjoyed having her. I took my Dad to visit her and he recalled her as a cute little girl when she and her parents visited the old Carter home place to see grandparents. I enjoyed seeing all the old Carter photos she had collected in a white box she kept in her basement.
May God bless and comfort you in this sad loss.
