Robert Lyss Newland, Sr.

June 5, 1920 ~ September 3, 2017 (age 97) 97 Years Old


            Mr. Robert Lyss Newland, Sr., 97, of 4th Street NE, of Taylorsville, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Sunday, September 3, 2017 at Catawba Valley Medical Center.

            Mr. Newland was born June 5, 1920 in Alexander County, the son of the late Walter Newland and Onie Jones Newland. Lyss is the last grandson of Sarah Billie Jones, who was a slave in the 1800’s.

            He was a US Army veteran, who had served in WWII and was a member of New Zion Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon for many years.  Also, served as Superintendant of the Sunday School Department, a Sunday school teacher, church Treasurer, Chairman of Deacon Board, and was a former member of the Masonic Lodge in Taylorsville.

            He was employed by Champion Paper Inc. for several years prior to being a scrap hander in the community. He had also worked as manager of the receiving at the Trio Grocery Store.

Including his parents, he was preceded in death by: his wife, Elizabeth Brawley Newland; a son, Robert Lyss Newland, Jr.; two sisters, Cora Belle Keaton, and Juanita Newland Murrell; five brothers, James, Roosevelt, Theodore, Leroy and Rayford Newland.

            Those left to cherish his memory include: three daughters, Linda Newland Lackey of Hiddenite, Dornetta Newland of Taylorsville, Elizabeth J. Newland Williams of Laurel, MD; seven grandchildren, Robin Lackey, John R. Lackey, Jr., Anthony Lackey, Quintin Newland, Robert Lyss Newland, III, Akia Newland Rose and Jemelle Williams; three great-grandchildren; nine Godchildren, Christopher Catchings,  Diona Miller, Tonja Fox, Elizabeth Herman, Trunita Lackey, Harry Lackey, Jr., L. J. Howell, Donzan Howell and Bhavik Patel; and several nieces and nephews.

            The home-going service will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, September 9, 2017 at New Zion Baptist Church. Rev. Frank Butler, Jr. and Bishop Ricky Hayes will officiate. Burial will follow in the Macedonia Baptist Church Cemetery (New Zion part) with full military honors accorded by DAV Chapter 84 of Taylorsville.

            Pallbearers include: Quintin Newland, David Poole, Ronnie James, Leon Mayberry, Steve Watts and Bruce Newland.

            Honorary pallbearers include: Anthony Lackey, John Lackey, Jr., Phil Barker, Jerry Mayes, Jessie Linney and Jessie Mayes, Sr.

            The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
