Alice Land Obituary

Alice Roxanna Reese Land of Taylorsville, age 83, passed away on April 24, 2024. Born on April 30, 1940 in Alexander County, she was the daughter of the late George W. Reese, Sr. and Mary Cline Reese.

A 1958 graduate of Taylorsville High School, she received her bachelor's degree in Elementary Education in 1972 and her master's degree in Early Childhood Education in 1981, both from Lenoir Rhyne College. A compassionate and selfless educator, Mrs. Land was a kindergarten, first grade, and Title 1 teacher for three decades, primarily at Ellendale Elementary and Alexander County Schools. During retirement, she and her husband Jim enjoyed operating J&A Orchard, a beautiful mountaintop pick-your-own apple, peach, and pear orchard in the Ellendale community. She was a faithful member of St. Luke Lutheran Church, where she served as choir director, Sunday school teacher, pianist and organist, food ministry volunteer, and Women of the ELCA leader, and she joyfully organized monthly birthday and bingo luncheons. She was a dedicated Girl Scout leader for thirty years, inspiring generations of girls to care for others, think boldly, live confidently, travel far, and make the world a better place. She loved music, singing, playing piano and organ, theatre, family history, reading, attending her children’s and grandchildren’s performances and special events, traveling to all 50 states, the Caribbean, and 3 countries, camping and RV adventures, holiday celebrations, and cooking for her family and friends. Alice shared her love through comfort food, making wonderful cakes and desserts, the world’s best scrambled eggs, secret-recipe spaghetti sauce, and her signature “garden dinners”, and she was well-known for the dill pickles she canned with love and pride every summer.

She married James "Jim" Nowell Land on March 29, 1959, and they recently celebrated 65 years of love, faith, and family. Those left to cherish her memory include her brother George Reese, Jr., sister-in-law Lyda Sue Bentley Reese, and sister-in-law Patricia Land Belk. She will be greatly missed and forever honored by her loving children: daughter Robin Land Reid and son-in-law Richard "Rick" Reid, son David Land and daughter-in-law April Jolly Land, son Dr. Reese Land and daughter-in-law Paola Manrique-Land, and daughter Lucinda Land Morin and son-in-law Mario Morin. "Mama Land" was the proud grandmother to six beloved grandchildren: Brent Reid (Ashley), Travis Reid (Maira), Tyler Land (Jennifer), Lesley-Ann Land Sikora (Michael), Alex Land, and Henry Land, and to seven great-grandchildren, Jackson Reid, Ella Reid, Aracely Reid, Alyssa Rogers, Noah Reid, Wynter Reid, and Katie Land. She will be remembered with love by her maternal aunts and uncle, Mary Faye Cline, Jean Cline, and Blondell and Clay Cline, along with numerous special nieces, nephews, cousins, fellow church members, THS classmates, the extended Land’s Electric Repair family, friends, and neighbors.

A celebration of Alice's life will be held on Saturday, April 27, 2024 in the sanctuary at St. Luke Lutheran Church in Taylorsville, NC, officiated by Reverend James Dahl. Visitation will be at 10:00 AM and the service at 11:30 AM, with burial to follow in the St. Luke cemetery.
