Alva Elemma Payne Lackey Hoke
Born July 12, 1926, Alva P. Hoke passed away at home on July 18. Her funeral service
will be held Friday July 23 at 11:00 at the Hiddenite Methodist Church with internment
following at Hiddenite Cemetery. Reverend Greg Lee will be the presiding minister.
Born to Julius Stamey Payne and Mamie Leota Stine Payne, she graduated from high
school in Alexander County.
As a young girl, she worked with her sisters at her father’s drug store in downtown Hiddenite in the building that now houses The Yellow Deli.
After graduating from Mitchell College, she worked for the Alexander Railroad, first in
Hiddenite and, later, in Taylorsville.
She was a lifelong member of Hiddenite Methodist Church where she was a member of
the choir and taught Sunday School for youth for many years. She was an active
member of the UMW for decades.
She also operated stables, in conjunction with her first husband, Phil Lackey, and
trained Tennessee Walking Horses.
As a painter, she enjoyed creating landscapes, and her house is filled with her many
paintings. She was the featured artist in a show at the Hiddenite Center and contributed
pieces in other exhibitions.
She was predeceased by her parents, her sister, Martha Leota Payne Hoke, and her
second husband, George Clayton Hoke.
She is survived by her sister Rita Payne Ledford, of Hiddenite, and her stepchildren,
Tim (Kim) Hoke of Chapel Hill, Rodger (Linda) Hoke of Pfafftown, Chris Hoke (Elizabeth
Andrews) of Raleigh, and Tom (Rachel) Hoke of Piedmont, SC.
She is also survived by eight step-grandchildren and eight step-great grandchildren and
her nephew, Don Ledford (Jeana) of Winston-Salem.
The family extends its appreciation to her wonderful caregivers, especially Theta and
Tammy, for their conscientious and loving care and to Alexander County Hospice.
