Mrs. Bernice Josephine Sparks Mathis “G G”, 96, of North Wilkesboro passed away on Monday, November 17, 2025 at her home.
Bernice was born on September 14, 1929 in Forsyth County, North Carolina to William “Barney” Sparks and Rachel Victoria Joines Sparks.
Bernice was a member of Antioch Baptist Church. She was also a member of the Little Brushy Mountain Fire Department where she was a First Responder. Some of her volunteer work included, The Red Cross and the America Legion VFW Ladies Auxiliary Post 1142. She was an avid farmer raising both chicken and cattle for over 60 years; she also worked at Holly Farms-Tyson for 29 years.
Bernice is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Gaither Lee Mathis; son, William L. Mathis; sisters, Blanche Sparks Daniel, Doris Sparks Cioffi, Faith Sparks Hawkins; brother, Claude W. Sparks.
Bernice is survived by her daughter, Barbara Mathis Dunnigan of King North Carolina; Bruce A. Mathis and wife, Louise Mathis of Wilkesboro North Carolina; grandchildren, David Dunnigan, Jennifer Campbell and husband, James, Autumn Hartley and husband, Tim, Seth Mathis and wife, Tandy; 11 great grandchildren, 3 great great grandchildren.
A visitation will be held Saturday December 6, 2025 at 2:00 p.m. in the Adams Funeral Home of Wilkes Chapel; 2109 Moravian Falls Road, Moravian Falls, NC 28654. A Celebration of life will be held at 3:00 p.m. Saturday, December 6, 2025 in the Adams Funeral Home of Wilkes Chapel. A Private burial will be held at a later date.
Speaker Tim Hartley will be officiating.
The family would like to say a special thank you to her caregivers, Autumn Hartley, Nancy Ferguson, Pam Mitchell, Betty Eller and all the neighbors and friends on the mountain for all their caring, love and support.
No flowers are to be accepted per Bernice’s request, memorial may be made to the Alzheimer’s Foundations, Little Brushy Mountain Fire Department, American Legion VFW Post 1142 or a charity of the donor’s choice.
