Chalma Barker Obituary

Mrs. Chalma Watts Barker, age 80, of 74 Sterling Lane, Taylorsville, North Carolina entered into eternal rest on March, 13, 2020 at her home surrounded by family and friends.

Chalma was born on October 2, 1939 in Alexander County, the daughter of the late Chester Field Watts and Mildred Stokes Watts.

Chalma attended Happy Plains High School, Taylorsville, NC and Secretarial College in New York. She attended Macedonia Baptist Church and served as Sunday and Bible school teacher, kitchen committee member, Bible study and anywhere she was asked to serve.

Chalma loved socializing, attending and working church events, and had a wonderful smile that could light up a room.

She worked for many years at Taylor Togs in Taylorsville, NC. Chalma then found her choice employment that was built on passion and an adoration of working with children at First Baptist Church Daycare in Taylorsville, NC. She worked at FBDC devotedly until retirement. Even after all her years of service, everywhere she went she was still greeted with cheerfulness by her previous children from her classes and their parents. She was treasured by all.

Including her parents, she is united in Heaven with her husband of 51 years, Phillip Barker; a sister, Nancy W. Carson; a sister, Clara L. Watts; a sister, Rita B. Watts; a brother, Ernest H. Watts; and a special aunt, Marie Dobbins.

Those left to honor and cherish her memory include her godchildren, Christan D. Watts and Brandice R. Watts; sister and caretaker, Patricia Watts of Taylorsville, NC; sister and caretaker, Sharon W. Glover of Vista, CA; sister, Annette W. Bruner of Taylorsville, NC; brothers, James A. Watts and wife Virginia of Charlotte, NC; and Steve Watts and wife Sue of Taylorsville, NC, a special friend, Etta Mae Miller; and a host of nieces and nephews, and friends, a special niece Millicent N. Bruner of Taylorsville, NC.

A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, March 21, 2020 at Macedonia Baptist Church. Rev. William L. Brown, Sr. and Rev. Macy Jones officiating. The family requests that we all follow the CDC and the Governor of North Carolina guidelines to refrain from shaking hands and hugging.
