Derk Mitchell, 57, of North Wilkesboro, NC, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, November 29, 2025, while visiting with his brothers, Mark and Gary Flynn in Vermilion.
Born on August 27, 1968, in Elyria, OH, Derk spent most of his life in Vermilion before settling in North Wilkesboro 17 years ago. For nearly four decades, he worked as a dedicated self-employed tradesman, known for his strong work ethic and willingness to help anyone in need.
At the center of Derk’s world was his family. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather "Paw-Paw", son, and brother whose life was grounded in love, loyalty, and togetherness. Derk had a gift for making each family member feel valued, and he found his greatest joy simply being surrounded by them-whether gathered around the dinner table, working side by side on a project, or sharing quiet moments outdoors. His interests in gardening, nature, tinkering, and classic cars were all enriched by the time he spent sharing these passions with his children and grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Christine Marie Mitchell (nee Grisez), of North Wilkesboro, NC; his mother, Sally (nee Turner) Mitchell; Derk and Christine's beloved children: Anthony (Julie), Tyler (Jennifer), Jacob (Erin), Spencer (Amber), Joshua (Abigail), Isaiah (Brooke), Noah (Christina), Josiah (Maggie), Sierra, Colin (Kimberly), Elijah, Jessup, Isaac, and Olivia; 34 cherished grandchildren; his sister, Torrionno (John) Dutton; and many nieces and nephews.
Derk was preceded in death by his father, Harold Mitchell, six infant children, including Liam, who he now joins in eternal rest, and his brother-in-law, Joseph Grisez.
