Jane Campbell Harbinson Teague March 1, 1942 – January 4, 2024
Dr. Jane H. Teague of Taylorsville, NC died peacefully and painlessly just before midnight on Thursday, January 4th at Hickory Village Memory Care after a five-year battle with Alzheimer’s disease. Teague was born in Hickory, NC to the late Rev. Cline W. Harbinson and Madeline C. Harbinson, but for most of her life, Taylorville was her home. She loved “small town living” and spent over forty years in service to her community through her work in the field of education — the last 32 years with Alexander County Schools before retiring in 2005. In 2013, she was awarded the most prestigious Award of Honor from the Alexander County Board of Education for her work in special education — a moment of pride and validation for not only her, but her family.
Dr. Teague greatly valued education and held multiple degrees. She was a 1964 graduate of Lenoir Rhyne college, received both a Specialist Degree and a Masters from Appalachian State University and ultimately earned her doctoral degree in Special Education Administration from The University of North Carolina at Greensboro. But it was the education of others that truly motivated her, as she demonstrated through her work as a classroom teacher, guidance counselor, and ultimately as Director of Exceptional Children’s programs for Alexander County Schools.
Jane was also a visible and loved member of the Taylorsville community and was a source of help and inspiration to so many. She was a loyal friend, wise mentor, trusted co-worker, and the loving matriarch of the Teague/Harbinson family.
In addition to her parents, Dr. Teague was preceded in death by her beloved brothers Phil Harbinson of Salisbury, NC, and Mark Harbinson of Taylorsville. She is survived by her only son Anthony Teague and wife Alice (children Claire Hutto, Nick Hutto) of Hickory NC, her two grandsons Alex Teague of Charlotte NC, and Aaron Teague and wife Riley of Hickory, NC, her youngest brother Joel Harbinson and wife Connie of Statesville NC, and nephews Joe Harbinson of Little River, SC, Jonathan and wife Amanda Harbinson of Salisbury, NC, Justin Harbinson of Hickory, NC, Jarrett Harbinson of Statesville, NC, as well as six grandnieces/grandnephews (Jenna, Jamison, Jacob, Bryce, Cole, and Ady).
The family will have a private service but ask that any memorials be made to two charities close to Jane’s heart — Alexander County Special Olympics and Autism Speaks.
