Jonas “JP” Partee Austin, Jr., age 86, of Taylorsville passed peacefully Tuesday, July 5, 2022 at Wilkes Medical Center, Wilkesboro, after a brief illness. He was born in Alexander County, North Carolina on April 17, 1936 to the late Jonas Partee Austin, Sr. and Nellie Beatrice Cline Austin and was a member of Lebanon Baptist Church. JP was a member of the US Army from 1953-1956 and served in the Korean Conflict. JP attended Taylorsville High School and worked in the furniture industry most of his life as an upholsterer. Outside of work, he enjoyed most types of outdoor activities, including golfing, fishing, hunting, and gardening. He was an avid golfer and was an original member at Brushy Mountain Golf Club where he spent many hours. He also enjoyed and attended most sporting events for his grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death his spouse of 59 years, Clara Jean Deal Austin and two daughters, Kathy Roxanne Austin Mitchell, and Mitzi Jean Austin Watts. JP was one of 17 children. He was preceded in death by sisters, Eula Mae Austin Bowman, Alice Irene Austin Starnes, Lou Ella Austin Bowman, Wilma Novella Austin Cochran, Kay Nell Austin, and a stillborn infant sister. He was also preceded in death by brothers, Jonas McCoy Austin, James Arthur Austin, Willard Perry Austin, Garland Avery Austin, Gerald Dean Austin, and Roy Lee Austin.
He is survived by his daughters, Victoria Lynne Austin Martin and husband, Russell Dale Martin, of Conover; Crystal Faith Austin Price and husband, Richard Wayne Price, of Taylorsville; two sons-in-law, Jeffrey “Quince” Watts and Dwight Gilbert Mitchell, both of Taylorsville; nine grandchildren, Jessica Fox Moretz, and husband Dan of Southern Pines, NC; Dustin Ray Galloway and wife, Krystal Lea Galloway of Oshkosh, Wisconsin; Johnathan William Mitchell of Taylorsville; Megan Elizabeth Mitchell and fiancé, Adam Brown of Taylorsville; Christopher Lynn Watts of Taylorsville; Catherine Grace Watts of Taylorville; Jonas Dakota Watts of Taylorsville; Matthew Dillon Campbell and fiancé, Kolbi Camp of Hickory; Heidi Marie Fox of Taylorsville; two step-grandchildren, Zach Price and wife, Tasha of Taylorsville; Kurt Price and wife, Kayleigh of Statesville; 10 great-grandchildren, Madison Victoria Moretz Moutos and husband, Demetrios Moutos; Daniel Clay Moretz and wife, Bailey, Sarah Grace Moretz, Ashlyn Kate Moretz; Lucius Gabriel Dean Brown; Colten Drew Dalton, Courtlynn Faith Dalton, Haagen Wesley Walker; Ronyn James William Galloway, Nolah Lee Campbell; two step-great grandchildren, Maxton Wayne Price and Denver Wray Price. JP is also survived by two brothers, Clarence William Austin of Hickory; Gary Austin of Hudson; two sisters, Sylvia Loretta Austin Hefner of Taylorsville, and Brenda Joyce Austin Cooke of Bethlehem.
Honorary pallbearers are Ray Wells, who served with him in Korea, and frequent fishing, hunting, and golfing friends, Larry Sigmon, Harvey Russ, and Billy Lackey.
The family of Mr. Austin will hold a graveside memorial service for family and friends on Saturday, July 23rd, 2022, at 11:00 a.m. The service will be held at Jolly Cemetery located at 845 Jolly Cemetery Road, Taylorsville, NC with Rev. Eddie Jolly officiating. Alexander County Veterans Honor Guard will be presenting full military honors. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be donated to Lebanon Baptist Church Building Fund, c/o Tammy Fortner, 70 Mount Olive Church Road, Taylorsville, NC 28681.
