In remembrance of Patricia “Pat” Ann McCurdy Patterson born December 20, 1940 in Cabarrus County, she peacefully departed from this world on Tuesday, January 2, 2024 at her home surrounded by those who loved her dearly. Known affectionately as Bess by some, she was the cherished wife of Thomas Lee Patterson who survives. She was the daughter of the late Rev. Mackado Arthur McCurdy and Floy Smith McCurdy.
Raised in the church, she anchored the alto section in choirs at Bristol Drive Baptist Church and Northview Wesleyan Church. In addition to her beautiful talent of singing, she was also a very knowledgeable Sunday School Teacher.
Pat graduated from Hiddenite High School in 1958. She was the chief cheerleader and a stellar basketball player. She also was a member of the school’s drama program and was the lead actress in her senior class play.
Following high school Pat was employed at the Taylorsville box factory followed by RJ Reynolds in Winston Salem. She then went on to further her education by attending and graduating Brown’s College of Beauty Arts where she became a licensed instructor of cosmetology. She began her career as an instructor at Alexander Central High School, then moved on to Catawba Hairstyling Academy where she spent the majority of her teaching career. She ended her career managing and operating the Phase II Hairstyling Academy.
She was very devoted to those in need. She delivered for the Meals on Wheels program, and she was a dedicated volunteer at South Yadkin Baptist Association.
She enjoyed camping and making memories with her family as well as camping with friends in the Good Sam Country Cruisers Camping Club. She was a member of the Alexander County Red Hatter’s Society and Senior Center where she participated in several productions and sang with the Singing Seniors Choir. Later in life Pat became an avid genealogy enthusiast, traveling hundreds of miles and researching thousands of documents to map her family’s ancestry.
Pat’s life was a tapestry woven with love, kindness, and unwavering dedication to her family. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister Carolyn McCurdy Bentley. Loved ones left to cherish her memory include her husband of 60 years, Thomas Lee Patterson, of the home; four daughters Bequi Cordero of Athens, GA; Tracy Lynne Patterson, Tricia Ann Patterson Lucas (Don), and Pamela Sue Patterson, all of Statesville; a son, Douglas Lee Patterson (Mary) of Yorktown VA; eight grandchildren, Nicole Patterson (David), Melissa Patterson (Laura), Stephanie Patterson, Shane Lucas, Emily Lucas, Brett Lucas (Vanessa), Mia Patterson, and Meg Meadows; and one great grandchild, Maxwell Thomas Pijor: two sisters, Phyllis Louise McCurdy and Kathryn Jane McCurdy, of Taylorsville; a sister-in-law Elata (Ernest) of Taylorsville; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews, and loving friends. Beyond her immediate family, she extended her love and care as a foster parent to children, leaving an indelible impact on their lives.
Her legacy lives on in the hearts of her husband, her family, and all those fortunate enough to have known her. As we bid farewell to this remarkable woman, let us remember the joy she brought to our lives and the enduring love that will forever connect us. Pat will be laid to rest in beautiful and peaceful Shady Grove Cemetery in Vashti, NC.
The family wishes to extend their heartfelt gratitude to Pat’s incredible team of care givers (Emily, Dorothy, Kay, and Sheila) and to the Staff of Hospice of Iredell County.
