Rita (Payne) Ledford

            Rita Payne Ledford, age 91, of Hiddenite, passed away on Tuesday, September 20, 2022 at her home.

            Rita was born July 13, 1931 in Alexander County, the daughter of the late J. Stamey Payne and Mamie Stine Payne.

            She graduated from Lenoir Rhyne College and taught in the Alexander County Public School System. She was a very active member of Hiddenite United Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday school, was a member of the choir, and United Methodist Women. After her retirement from teaching, she took up oil painting for which she won numerous awards. She also enjoyed gardening and swimming in the family pool.

            Including her parents, she was preceded in death by: her husband, Harvey C. Ledford, Jr.; her sisters, Leota Hoke, and Alva Hoke.

            Those left to cherish and honor her memories include: her son, Don H. Ledford and his wife, RoJeana of Winston-Salem; and a number of family and friends.

            The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m., Monday, September 26, 2022 at the Hiddenite United Methodist Church. Rev. Greg Lee and Rev. Ray Tavenner will officiate. Burial will follow in the Hiddenite Cemetery.

            The family will receive friends from 1:00 until 1:45 p.m. prior to the service in the Hiddenite United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall.
