Roger Moose Obituary

Roger Eugene Moose, age 68, of Taylorsville, NC won his courageous battle with cancer when he crossed the threshold of his heavenly home into the welcoming arms of his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Wednesday, August 14, 2024. The oldest of four children, Roger was born in Statesville, NC on September 30, 1955, to parents Rowe Wayne and Margaret Williams Moose.

Roger was a member of Sandy Ridge Baptist Church of Hickory. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 46 years, Judy Ellen Benfield Moose, as well as his father, Rowe Moose.

Those left to carry on his legacy are his two children: son, David Moose (Amanda) of Taylorsville and daughter, Katie Smith (Greg) of Bethlehem. Roger was a loving “PawPaw” to his grandchildren, Addison, Chloe, and Samuel Moose of Taylorsville, Jackson and Olivia Smith of Bethlehem. Also left to cherish his memory are his mother, Margaret Moose; two brothers, Edward Moose (Tammy), Robert Moose all of Taylorsville; his sister, Sissy Pennell (Tommy) of Taylorsville; as well as a number of aunts, uncles, nieces, and nephews. Roger also leaves behind one of his greatest companions, his Golden Retriever “Gabby”.

Throughout his life on earth, Roger fulfilled many roles, the greatest of which being a family man. He was a devoted and faithful husband, loving father, proud grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend, but he will be best remembered by his children as a provider who sacrificed to always ensure his family was well cared for.

Roger spent his early career as a carpenter, building a home for his family with his own two hands and the help of family members. His passion for creating things with his hands continued throughout his life and, in his twilight years, he enjoyed passing along that knowledge and skillset to his grandchildren as they worked together to complete his many projects.

Roger also enjoyed a decorated and long career serving the State of North Carolina in the Division of Adult Corrections. Rising over the years from the position of Corrections Officer to Assistant Superintendent, he was always humble, yet proud, of his career accomplishments. It was in this role that he found his true passion and calling in life of being an instructor and mentor to others. During his career, Roger developed strong bonds in the relationships he forged with many of his colleagues who considered him more than a co-worker or supervisor, but a true friend. His legacy will live on in the positive impacts he had on those individuals. Roger was also a Master Mason and Past Master of Lee Masonic Lodge #253 AF & AM of Taylorsville.

The children would like to give special thanks to Roger’s family members who so tirelessly helped care for him so that he could fulfill his desire of living out his final days at home. The love, compassion, and care shown to him brought him peace and comfort.

The family will receive friends from 2 p.m. until 3 p.m., Sunday, August 18, 2024 at Sandy Ridge Baptist Church, 3702 16 Street NE, Hickory, NC with a Celebration of Life Service to follow at 3 p.m. in the sanctuary. Pastor William Sturm and Pastor Randy Swisher will officiate.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Sandy Ridge Baptist Church, 10-52 Fund (Community Missions), 3702 16 Street NE, Hickory, NC. 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18 “Our hope rests in this”.
