Sherman Keith Russell, age 97, went to be with our Lord on Friday, January 10, 2025, at the Gordon Hospice House in Statesville, NC. Born May 7, 1927, on the family farm in the Sugarloaf community of northern Alexander County. His parents were the late Parks Russell and Della Davis Russell.
He was preceded in death by four sisters and two brothers.
He graduated from Taylorsville High School in 1944 and then served four years in the United States Navy primarily on a minesweeper in the Pacific. Following active duty, he served four years in the Naval Reserve. In 1949, he graduated from Clevenger College in Hickory, NC with a degree in Business Administration. He later became a successful General Agent with Allstate Insurance Company working with them for 38 years.
He married Doris Deal on February 10, 1951. She passed away in 2020. They were married over 69 years. They had three sons: Ronald K. Russell, Ed.D.,73, James D. Russell, M.Div., 72, and wife, Dale, and Mark H. Russell, A. A.S., 65. There are seven grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren. His family miss him a great deal. He was an outstanding example of what a Christian father should be. He enjoyed playing golf and flying light planes. He was a long-term member of Western Avenue Baptist Church serving many years as Treasurer.
The family will receive friends from Noon until 1 p.m., Friday, January 17, 2025, at Western Avenue Baptist Church in Statesville with the funeral service to follow at 1 p.m. Dr. Jeff Spry will officiate. Burial will follow at Mt. Olive Baptist Church Cemetery in Alexander County next to his wife.
