Thomas McNeill Memory
March 7, 1934—December 24, 2020
Thomas (Tom) McNeill Memory died on Thursday, December 24, 2020, at Valley Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Taylorsville, North Carolina.
Tom was born on March 7, 1934, in Whiteville, North Carolina, to Odessa Arnette Memory and Duncan Thomas Memory. Following the death of his father in 1949 when his family was living in Birmingham, Alabama, Tom, his mother, and three brothers moved to the Riverton community in Scotland County, North Carolina, to live in the log cabin built as a summer family home by Tom’s dad. After graduating from nearby Wagram High School, Tom attended North Carolina State University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering in 1955. Having participated in the Reserve Officer Training Corps program at NC State, he served two years as a Second Lieutenant and then First Lieutenant in the United States Army’s Corps of Engineers, including a year in South Korea. Following his honorable discharge from the Army, Tom joined the US-based aluminum company Alcoa as a sales representative. After several rewarding years in that capacity, he enrolled in the School of Law at Duke University, from which he graduated in 1965 with a Bachelor of Laws, which was the usual professional degree in law at that time. Tom’s excellent performance as a law student earned him an editorship of the Duke Law Journal and then a full-time position as an attorney with the Federal Trade Commission in Washington. He ended his career in law with that agency.
Tom is survived by two brothers—John Madison Memory of Columbia, South Carolina, and David McIntosh Memory of Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
Early in 2021 there will be a memorial service for Tom at Spring Hill Cemetery in Wagram, North Carolina. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Catharine Campbell and Daniel White Memorial Scholarship Fund administered by the North Carolina Community Foundation (nccommunityfoundation.org/list-of-funds).
