Thurman Teague Obituary

          

            Avery Thurman Teague, 69, of Taylorsville, was called home on Thursday, January 10, 2019 at Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care in Lenoir.

            He was born July 7, 1949 in Alexander County, the son of the late Rayford Teague and Sadie Horton Teague.

            He graduated from Happy Plains School in 1968. He was an All Conference Basketball player from 1964 – 1967. He was the first black to play basketball and baseball at Taylorsville High School. After high school he played for the famous Harlem Stars, semi-pro basketball team. In 2012 he was inducted into the first Alexander County Hall of Fame for his great basketball skills. He was a member of Liberty Grove Baptist Church and the all male choir, as well as assistant director of the choir. He loved the Lord. No matter where you would see Thurman, he would make you laugh.

            Including his parents, he was preceded in death by: his siblings, Jerry Green, Mack Parson (Deloris), Gloria Teague, Betty Parson (John), and Dorothy G. Johnson.

            Thurman will be cherished and remembered by his son, Hasani “Shani” Mayes , and wife, Maggie and grandchildren, Jalen and Lydia Mayes all of Taylorsville, Deyawna Rollinson, of Kings Mountain; sister, Glenda Bowers (Tony) of Lenoir; brothers, Leroy Green (Penny) of Columbus, OH, Sanford Teague (Celia) of Hickory, Garfield Teague (Lisa) of Taylorsville; aunts, Gracie Howell and Lacie Teague; a very special partner and close friend, Wanda Kay Mayberry; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

            The Home-Going Service will be at 2 p.m., Wednesday, January 16, 2019 at Liberty Grove Baptist Church. Rev. Ardeal Roseboro- Eulogist, Rev. William Little- Officiating and assisted by Revs. Sterling Howard and Kevin Ussery. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

            The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
